Healthy Living — Your Life on the Go

Living an active life with hemophilia B means learning all you can about your condition and the resources available to you. In addition to healthy eating and regular exercise, you’ll want to do all you can to prevent problems, such as joint damage, that might slow you down. And you’ll want to know where you can turn to in order to learn more about hemophilia B and the hemophilia B community. If you are a person living with hemophilia B, talk to your doctor about what exercises are right for you.

Ask your doctor about prevention

Prevention means thinking ahead and infusing factor before a particular activity that might cause a bleed. A preventive regimen, including preventive infusions, may help you participate in more activities. Contact your health care provider to discuss whether preventive treatment might be right for you.

Following your regimen is important

If your doctor has prescribed a preventive regimen, it's important to follow it as instructed.

Keeping joints healthy

One of the keys to staying active with hemophilia is learning how to keep your joints healthy. A joint is where 2 or more bones in your body come together. When bleeding is prolonged or repeated, blood can get into joints. Over time, the enzymes produced to remove the blood can damage the cartilage that acts as padding between the bones. This can cause pain and can limit motion, which can interfere with activities that you enjoy.

Once damage starts, it can be difficult or impossible to reverse, so it’s best to try to prevent damage in the first place. Talk to your doctor about preventing joint damage when discussing your treatment regimen.
